Melbourne: Rod Laver Arena witnessed a new champion in Stanislas Wawrinka, as the in-form Swiss over whelmed the World No. 1 Rafael Nadal (6-3, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3) at the Australian Open men’s singles final on Sunday.

Both, players Rafael Nadal, Spain and Stanislas Wawrinka, Swiss arrived on the court, to a rousing welcome. Rafael Nadal, having won the toss, decided to receive.

In spite of the fact, Stanislas Wawrinka has not won a single match against Nadal in their Previous 12 meetings; a lot was expected from Wawrinka, more so because the Swiss had packed off the defending champion Novak Djokovic in their quarter-final match.

At Rod Laver Arena, both the players played some amazing tennis throughout the tournament. In terms of matches won earlier, Nadal boasted a 12-0 lead over the Swiss, who was playing his first Major final. Over and above this, another interesting fact was that Wawrinka had never won a set against Nadal, before.

Nadal proved his mettle as a world class athlete, yet again, when he drubbed 17-time major champion Roger Federer in straight sets to reach the final in the opening Grand Slam of the year. Though, Federer was playing some great tennis, it was the Spaniard who over powered all the way in the semis, and the exhilaration of a Rafa vs Federer match didn’t live up to its reputation.

In the quarter-final, Rafa did struggle against Grigor Dimitrov. The 22-year-old Bulgarian astonishingly won the first set, subsequent to which Nadal fought back and recorded a (3-6, 7-6, 7-6, and 6-2) victory.

On the other hand, Wawrinka turned out to be a totally new player, as a result of which he worn out defending champion Novak Djokovic in their quarter-final clash. It was something like revenge for the Swiss who regardless of giving a neck-to-neck fight to the Serb, was packed off in a marathon five-setter last year.

Although, Wawrinka was not playing his best in the semi-final match, against Tomas Berdych, he still pulled off another victory to reach the final. Wawrinka’s power packed game and his unbelievable backhand, had been the best part of his play. Moreover, he had to play his heart out, as he nursed the hopes and entertained chances of winning his first Major title.

The three-time defending champion, Novak Djokovic was beaten in the quarterfinals by the eventual champion Stanislas Wawrinka, who thus brought Djokovic's 25-match winning streak at the event, 28-match winning streak overall and a streak of 14 consecutive Grand Slam semi finals to an end.

Wawrinka won the title by beating Rafael Nadal in the final, putting an end the run of the Big Four, stretching back to the 2009 US Open. Also, he became the first male player after Sergi Bruguera at the 1993 French Open to defeat the top two seeds in a Grand Slam event.

Roger Federer broke the record of consecutive Grand Slam appearances, by contesting in this tournament, as this was his 57th consecutive participation at a Major.
Stanislas Wawrinka was hoped to play his best tennis in the men's singles final against World No. 1 Rafael Nadal. And the Swiss did precisely that to beat the robust Spaniard at the Rod Laver Arena.
The 26-year-old was too good for Nadal, who was struggling with a back problem in the latter part of the match. Right from the word go, Wawrinka was in commanding position as he did not allow Nadal to cope with the game.

In the fourth game, Wawrinka broke Rafa's serve early in the first set. He had another opportunity of break point in the sixth game of the same set but the Spaniard held his serve.
Nadal failed to capitalise on a huge opportunity when he had three break points in the ninth game of the first set. Wawrinka, who was trailing 0-40, won four consecutive points and served an ace to win the first set in just 37 minutes.

Wawrinka sustained his radiance even in the second set when he right away broke Nadal's serve in his first service game, which was the first game of the set.
Probably, the turning point of the match was, when lagging behind at 1-2 in the second set, Nadal, bothered by back problem,  took a medical time out summoning for his physiotherapist. However, when Rafa resumed play, he was anything but his best and there was an enormous decline in the speed of his serves which was a huge advantage for the Swiss who went for the kill.
It appeared, at one point of time, that Nadal would not be able to complete the match, due to back problem. The Spaniard was not only unrelenting, but also went on to win the third set. Rafa was required to take medical assistance for his back problem on a few more instances as well. The physiotherapist was seen trying to help him on the court.

Nevertheless, by the end of the third set, Rafa was getting back in his elements, though slowly, and gave a tough fight to the Swiss in the nine games of the fourth set, before conceding in four sets.
The fact, not having won a single match against Nadal in their 12 clashes, did not deter Wawrinka. And a lot was expected of him especially; as the Swiss knocked out the defending champion and Nadal's old nemesis Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final. And Stan met all those expectations and did not allow the pressure of playing in his first Grand Slam final dissuade his game.

Thus, Wawrinka became the first player to defeat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the same Grand Slam tourney. On the top of it, the conquest has also done wonders to his ATP ranking making him the new No. 3.

Nadal's hope of becoming the first player in modern era to have won all the Grand Slams twice was shattered by this loss. The victory would have also made his record equal with Pete Sampas's record of 14 Major titles.
