WTA Tour Championships 2013 Schedule

The WTA Tour Championships an annual tennis tournament is the ultimate event of the season. This tournament is contested by the top-ranked players on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The event, 2003 onwards, has been contested by eight singles players divided into two groups, and four doubles teams.

Thefinal of the championships, during 1984-1998, was a best-of-five-sets match. It wasthe only women’s tournament that had best-of-five match at any round of the competition. The final reverted to a best-of-three-sets match, in 1999.

The maiden championships were held October in 1972in Boca Raton, Florida (USA).As it was sponsored by Virginia Slims, the event was known as the Virginia Slims Championships, from 1972 to 1978. The event became to be known as the Avon Championships, as Avon sponsored during 1979-1982.  Virginia Slims came back as the sponsor in 1983 and the event was renamed as the Virginia Slims Championships and continued same way till 1994 when Virginia Slims terminated their sponsorship. The event, in 1995 was conducted withouta sponsor andwas known as the WTA Tour Championships. It was termed as the Chase Championships from 1996 to 2000. It was the Sanex Championships in 2001, while in 2002, the Home Depot Championships. In 2003 and 2004, the event title was once again the WTA Tour Championships. The event was called the Sony Ericsson Championships from 2005 to 2010 as it was sponsored by Sony Ericsson. The event sponsored by BNP Paribas and Türk Ekonomi Bankası jointly, is known as the TEB–BNP Paribas WTA Championships, from 2011 to 2013.

The 2013 WTA Tour Championships will be held at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey from October 21 to October 27, 2013. It is the 43rd edition of the singles event and the 38th edition of the doubles competition and contested by eight singles players and four doubles teams, respectively.

The WTA Tour Championships, afterthe four Grand Slam tournaments, is considered to be the fifth most premier event on the women's tour.
Martina Navratilova was most successful, having won 8 singles and 12 doubles titles overall.
