The tournament encompassesa qualifying stage and group stage. The qualifying stage comprises of four teams contesting a round-robin competitionand the top two teams qualify for the group stage. These two teams join the eight teams that were given direct entry in the group stage. These ten teams divided into two groups of five teams each at group level and each group plays a round-robin contest. The top two teams of each group progress to the knockout stage. The knockout stage contains two semi-finals, with the top team of one group facing the second from the other. The winners of the semi-finals play the grand final to determine the winners of the competition. Matches ending with a tie are decided by a Super Over and the winners of the Super Over are declared winners of the match.

The total prize money for the competition is US$6 million, same as previous editions. Besides, the prize money, each team receives a participation fee of $500,000.

England teams in view of these dates being incompatible with those of the County Championship, have declined to participate forever in the tournament starting with this edition. Owing to similar date problems, England teams had failed to take part in the 2010 edition.

Trinidad and Tobago gained direct qualification owing to their consistent good past performances,in contrast to the previous two seasons. They were qualified superseding the winners of the newly-formed Caribbean Premier League.

A team from Pakistan will feature in this edition and this is Pakistan’s second appearance.Pakistan was excluded from 2012 edition because of its government and armed forces involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The winners of the Sri Lanka Premier League were originally slated to partake in the qualifying stage, before the tournament was cancelled. Instead,Sri Lanka will hold the Inter-Provincial Twenty20 to decide their representative team.
